Shizuko “Margaret” Hirako, 91, of Waimea died Aug. 11 at home. Born in Wahiawa, Oahu, she was a co-founder of Hirako Farms and member of Kamuela Japanese American Civic Association. Services held. No flowers or koden (monetary gifts). Memorial donations to North Hawaii Hospice. Survived by sons, Roger (Deborah) Hirako and Jeffrey (Elaine) Hirako of Waimea, Norman (Jo-Ann) Hirako of Hilo; daughter, Sharon Hirako of Waimea; sister, Ethel Toshiko Okamoto of Honolulu; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. John Herbert Marean, 97, of Kailua-Kona died Aug. 25 at home. Born in Fallon, Nev., he was a retired university professor, past president and life member of National Science Teachers Association, member of American Legion Post 20, and Air Force World War II veteran. Survived by wife, Rosalind Marean of Kailua-Kona; son, David (Trudy) Marean of Clovis, Calif.; daughter, Alona King of Idaho Falls, Idaho; stepdaughters, Sherri Deponte and Sheila (Dennis) Colon of Kailua-Kona; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and seven stepgreat-grandchildren. Burial for the late Gilbert “Papa Gil” Silva Sampaia was rescheduled to 11:30 a.m. Friday (Sept. 4) at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2.
